I have a passion for color, texture, balance, design and how best to manipulate each in ways that are new and exciting to me. This is what first led me to a 25-year career as an interior designer and later to explore these elements in a two dimensional realm as a painter.
Although I enjoy rendering, realism and drawing, and still maintain a daily practice, much like an athlete stretching before a run, the technical aspects of painting hold little interest for me. My work starts with an image inspired by the complexities and layers of nature or the depth, tone and essence of a narrative, this guides me in the selection of mediums, colors and compositions. But it is at this point when I allow the play of the paint, the texture of a found material, the stroke of the brush, and the surprise of the marks to drive and direct the finished work.
For me, painting is a passionate, physical, gestural dance, culminating in a visual idea designed to engage the emotions of the viewer.
