    I have embraced the new techno-art movement where photographic images are created into a new form of expression. Exactly where this transition takes place is a subjective opinion. One can definitely give examples of traditional art photography and techno-art photography images. Where a processed photograph crosses the line from one genre to the next is quite debatable. I do both of these genres. Techno-art photography beckons back to the days when I physically combined images or did manipulations during capture. My first color altering experience goes back to Richard Nixon's resignation speech where I changed the colors of the capture images by altering the controls on an RCA TV. I made a composite image of three original images to express the meaning of the art.

    Computer based programs allowed the first transition to occur when it used math to do work originally done in the darkroom by chemistry and light manipulation. At first the math was used to just more efficiently produce traditional photographic art but it morphed into a new art form as the computer programs got smarter and started allowing photographer to make manipulation not possible in any practical sense in the traditional photographic art. Even the definition of what a photograph is has come into question.

    I believe that photography is defined as the photographic process thru the use of a lens with some exceptions for a few alternate photographic processes that do not use a lens as a focusing device. A photo starts with a capture of the real world by a lens and a light sensitive recording device. I include an alternative photographic capture known as a photogram because of history's perception at the time that photograms are a form of photography. The object itself modulates the light and the enlarger lens just controls the overall exposure.

    I defined still photography into two art forms ; the traditional and the techno-art. The traditional photographic art forms does depend on the basic technology of the lens and the camera. Techno-art photography has taken the technological creation unto a new level creating photographic output that is inconceivable by the more traditional form. Technological advances has also rendered some of the traditional photographic methods of chemistry into more efficient production but the art criteria for traditional photographic art prints remains the same.

    The Qualities of A Photograph consists of (1) visually exciting (2) content oriented and (3) dependency on a variable. More on this important variable later.

    The question some raise is whether the subject needs to be recognizable. At some level the subject must be recognized even if it turns out to be a scribbled looking bunch of strokes other wise known as art. The real question is whether the subject is recognizable as representing something in the real world. Good photographs while being recognizable has some added quality, feeling or meaning. A photograph of recognizable objects with a feeling of light emanating from the picture is good picture as it give the photograph something intangible. A photograph that doesn't have a recognizable subject must at least have an added quality, feeling, meaning, an artistic effect* or positive effect on the viewer to be a good photograph.

    Some say "The changing definition of photography is influenced not just by technology but also by the conventions that successive generations have taken upon themselves" I firmly believe the definition of photography has not changed. The photographs that Ansel Adams made will always be photography .
    What has happened is that there are new forms of photography that I have for now label as techno art. It is still base on photography but have other things not in the original scene but artistically added to express the photographer the feeling or ideas he wishes to present. The fact that this techno art is different from other photographic art is that there are ideas and expressions that would not or could not even be produced without technology providing a new form of serendipity that is not present when one takes a camera into the forest to take images.

    Born in Westchester County, NY, I got an BA in Political Science at UNC-CH, Class of 1969. I started teaching a B&W lab at UNC and have been doing Photography on different levels ever since. I am a long time member of OCAG, Orange County Artists Guild (Orange County, NC) and the CPA, Cary Photographic Artists.
