Artist Profile

Jan Butta is a native of Chapel Hill. After living away for nearly 20 years, she returned here in January 1997.

She has been painting and developing her art over the last 14 years roughly, exhibiting her first works in 2003. Through invitation from the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, she exhibited 31 paintings at the Chapel Hill Town Hall to resounding success. Her style is using color, texture and movement in a way that is unique to her. Working mostly in oil, which affords malleability, she often incorporates fabric, papers, and miscellaneous small found objects.

Other exhibitions include Horace Williams House, The Women's Center Art Show, The Associated Artists of Southport National Competition and The Durham Art Guild. Jan has been on the Open Studio Tour since 2008. She is also a Founding Member, Artist Member, & Board Member of FRANK, which opened April 9, 2009 in Chapel Hill's downtown . Her work has been included in several themed shows there and one or two pieces are always on display.

"All art is a way of ultimately communicating (something). For me the voice or reflection which becomes revealed in a finished work of mine is something both mysterious and exciting. By working subconsciously and intuitively, a finished painting surprises, incorporating a "snapshot" of myself, or my life at its deepest level; providing an image unique from anything else. This fascinates and pleases me, and does so the very most when viewers resonate with a piece. It is amazing to observe what art speaks to which people. I like to think that those to whom my work speaks, are spirits I would find to be very much kindred." -
