Mary Lynn hails from the Pacific NW and grew up in Florida (Clearwater area). She received a diploma in nursing from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and a bachelors and master in nursing from the University of Florida. She also earned a PhD in psychometrics and evaluation from the same university, after which she taught nursing, statistics and related courses at the University of Mississippi and the University of Arizona. She is currently a Professor of Health Care Systems in the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she has worked since 1991. She loves the University and living in Chapel Hill and North Carolina. She is an ardent Gator and Tar Heel fan!
Mary always admired "large glass", such as the work of the Pearl River Glass Studio (pearlriverglass.com) (Mississippi). While in Arizona she tried her hand at stained glass and loved it. Over the next 25 years, she progressed to working in almost all forms of glass. Along the way she has taken courses related to both glass and metal at Penland School of Crafts and a number of glass-related seminars at the Art Glass Association annual meetings and, locally, at Carolina Stained Glass in Durham.
Mary works in (almost) all things glass! Glass boxes, panels, jewelry, kaleidoscopes, etched and fused glass, and flame-worked creations can all be found at her studio. Her work ranges from traditional (cold) stained glass to hot glass methods of etching, fusing and "small scale" glass-blowing using a torch. She notes: "I've been inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century, including the architectural and glass work of Frank Lloyd Wright. While the clean and geometric lines of this style appear simple to create, they are more difficult to do than more fluid modern abstract creations. I am constantly fascinated and inspired by the beauty and versatility of glass." Her work is progressing to combining metal and glass.
