When I first began to work with clay I remember how remarkable it was to be able to create something of beauty from a lump of earth.
I make small sculptures, vessels, and wall work. Birds, flowers, foxes, rabbits, and owls join the party. Many of my pieces are individual portraits of animals or birds whose personalities reveal themselves as I create, others are an exploration of botanical and nature themes.
I decorate the surfaces with a variety of colored slips and glazes. Details are made by carving into the surface, I also make textures and patterns with stamps and found objects.
Many influences come into play. They range from folk art to Persian miniatures to antique naturalist illustrations. My love of nature and animals, gardens and wild places all have a place at the table.
I bring a sense of wonder to my work and hope to create a meaningful connection between my art, nature and the viewer.
I live in the woods of Orange County, NC with my husband, artist Mark Brown and our sweet Australian Shepherd, Comet.
