Emily took up pottery after a 1979 move to Houston, Texas. She returned to her native state in 2004, where she studied at Claymakers studio and attended numerous workshops at the Odyssey in Asheville. In 2007, she had a studio built adjacent to her house where she works with clay slabs and slips. Her ceramic vessels function as frames for her painterly abstract images, which are echoed in her wall art.  Influences include the asymmetry of nineteenth century Japanese woodblock prints and simplicity of mid-century modern influence, while recurrent images also reference art deco and abstract expressionism. Her work may be found locally in FRANK Gallery in Chapel Hill, Womancraft, and Lyn Morrow Gallery, as well as in Greenhill Gallery Giftshop and Visual Index Gallery.  Her work is held in private collections in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, and Spain.
