I was studying graphic design when I took my first book arts class at Penland School of Crafts and I was immediately hooked. I love working with paper and board and the satisfaction I get when the structure comes together and is transformed. Bookbinding led me to box-making and more sculptural forms as I learned new methods to house my books. I am fascinated with the endless possibilities of shape for my containers, compartments and closures.
Often one small element, such as a stone or a piece of found metal will be the impetus for an entire piece. I choose my paper, cloth and colors based on what works with that item. Nature, color and pattern also provide inspiration. Whether making books, boxes or portfolios, I strive to make something beautiful, but also inviting; I want the viewer to open the flap, slide the drawer or whatever participation that piece involves.
